Ferries

Interesting topic. As I understand it the ferry system gets federal highway administration money; that says to me that it is presented as an alternative to an actual highway. I would think the FHA would not want to just dump money into nothing and would expect a minimum level of service, which would preclude them from whittling it down so far.

Anyway, I think given that the majority of the state lives in areas not served by the ferries and most of the rubes in the legislature probably want to put the capital in Whitetrashington, I mean Wasilla, its a popular and politically safe thing to teabag. And since previous half-term governors have put people in charge of the ferry system who have gone on record as saying they're against the ferry system, its probably been fairly well mismanaged.

My opinion is that it's a great thing and you're not going to balance the state budget by slashing ferry service. In theory it could turn a profit or break even if it wasn't a political punching bag.

I go to the VA so I feel the mismanaged pain. Also the Ferrys need to be replaced with newer ones but they are integral to the southeast. I mean how the hell am I gonna go to Mickey Ds and Wally World without it?
