My mind boggles that I have friends who I would consider fairly intelligent that post stuff on facebook like, "Can't wait till the u.s. accepts god as their leader." Really? REALLY??? You worship your God all you want, but you would love it and deeply desire that to be forced on everyone else too???
Not that I think that would legitimately ever happen, but wtf...
All this Kim Davis b.s. (and living in kentucky during all this) and hearing christians say stuff like they're being persecuted, etc etc. No one's telling you that you aren't allowed to practice your religion - you're just not allowed to use the government to push your religion on to others!!
Really this rant is about the God being leader post, like I would LOVE to post a reply on facebook to that post, but since fighting on the internet is pointless, venting here, haha.

I agree with your viewpoint largely, and I'd rather debate on a forum like this than on Facebook because Facebook arguments are the fucking worst. It's right in your face all the time and people don't know when to stop. Anyway.
I think ideally the government should not have any stance on religion. Religion should not inform laws, there shouldn't be any "under God", etc. and the reason I would think Christians should accept that is the golden rule -- threat others as you want to be treated. How would they like it if the tables were turned and someone said "This is a Muslim country; it's fine if you want to be Christian but you're a minority and all the laws here are going to be based on Islam so just get used to it." In fact I know they'd not like that, since they are already terrified about the Muslim President and Sharia Law (which aren't actually happening but they're freaked out nonetheless). But my argument is, if you don't want them to treat you that way, don't treat them that way.
Now they've anticipated or heard this argument which is why you hear them trying to preempt it by saying "This has always been a Christian country." The rationale is that, it's OK for Christians to repress other religions in the United States because it's a Christian country and if Muslims (for example) want freedom of their religion they should move to Saudi Arabia or a "Muslim country". But, there are two problems with that argument. First, they're wrong; if you look back to the "founding fathers" many of them were not Christians or made it clear that the US government wasn't based on Christian principles. Second, Saudi Arabia and countries like that are really fucked up and I don't want to live in the Christian version of them.
Oh, yeah, and also the fact that the Americas didn't practice Christianity until a bunch of European immigrants came and took over, so it's kind of rich hearing their descendants who are terrified of Muslim immigrants. Not so cool when it happens to you (even though it's not anywhere close to actually happening to them)!
